Job Description
The Nguyen lab in the Department of Pharmacology and Vanderbilt Brain Institute studies mechanisms of hyperexcitability in the brain. Our lab utilizes approaches such as ex vivo and in vivo electrophysiology, 2-photon calcium imaging, closed-loop optogenetics, and EEG recording in mice to understand neuronal function and how it goes awry in disorders such as epilepsy.
The Research Assistant position provides support for ongoing research efforts in the Nguyen lab. The individual hired for this position will be involved in helping set up and perform experiments as well as helping maintain the day-to-day operations of the lab. This position includes numerous opportunities to work with an interdisciplinary group of collaborators across biochemistry, bioengineering, and medicine and for publication, which can provide a strong basis for future applications to advanced degree programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with experiments, including stereotaxic surgery, immunohistochemistry, imaging, electrophysiology, and behavioral pharmacology
- Analyze experimental results using computer-aided data analysis software
- Maintains accurate databases and experimental notebooks of results
- Communicates results in a timely fashion
- Assist with mouse colony maintenance and husbandry
- Prepare buffers and reagents
- Assist with general laboratory operation, maintenance, and inventory
Qualifications
- A Bachelor degree in neuroscience, biology, chemistry, bioengineering, or a related field of study from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary
- At least one year of laboratory experience is strongly preferred
- Previous scientific work with rodents is strongly preferred
- Attention to detail is necessary and work with minimal supervision
- Self-motivation with a strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability is necessary
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, particularly Microsoft Excel, are strongly preferred, as are basic computer programming skills
- Strong organizational, oral, and written communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of lab members are necessary
