Job Description
The Registered Nurse is part of the University Counseling Center (UCC) in the Students Affairs division at Vanderbilt University. The Registered Nurse (RN) works under the supervision of the Associate Director of Psychiatry to provide professional outpatient nursing care to students utilizing UCC psychiatric services (provided at present by three psychiatrists and five Psychiatric-Mental Health nurse practitioners). The RN will serve several roles both student and non-student facing with a focus on clinical care, procedure development, and collaboration with campus partners. Primary duties include pre-visit nursing assessments (including eating disorder assessments), initial triage and management of daily phone calls and secure messages pertaining to psychiatric treatment (including referral to urgent care services or higher level of care as needed), routine psychiatric medication renewals, psychoeducation, co-development of policies and procedures to ensure safe and effective care, and collaboration with the Student Health Center (including laboratory orders and coordination of care). While the RN will work most closely with the Associate Director for Psychiatry, they will also collaborate closely with the Associate Director for Clinical Services, the Clinical Case Manager, the Psychiatry team and the UCC Administrative staff.

About the Student Care Network:
The Student Care Network (SCN) is comprised of the Center for Student Wellbeing, Student Care Coordination, the University Counseling Center, and the Student Health Center. The SCN is a holistic network of services and resources pertaining to health and wellness available to all Vanderbilt University students who have paid the Student Health Fee. As such, staff within the offices comprising the SCN work collaboratively to create integrated processes, referrals, and treatment plans to better serve the entire student.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:
Provide direct and indirect clinical care to students receiving psychiatric services:
- Assist the Lead Psychiatrist and Associate Director of Clinical Operations with case assignment for both psychiatric and therapy providers to promote smooth and effective change of providers when warranted.
- Respond to student concerns regarding psychiatric care and treatment, including providing initial triage and response to psychiatric concerns while medical providers are actively meeting with students. This will include students presenting outside of scheduled appointment times, calling the front desk, or sending secure messages to providers. This will require strong judgment skills regarding what can be managed by the RN and what requires additional consultation with the MD or PMH-NP.
- Renew medication prescriptions written by the Center’s medical providers to expedite communication with pharmacies.
- Complete vital sign and pre-visit assessments as needed for all medical appointments, as well as in the case of walk-in emergencies in which assessment of vital signs is needed to ensure effective and safe clinical care.
- Administer eating disorder assessments (i.e., EDE-Q) including vital sign assessments to promote multidisciplinary and multimodal assessment of eating concerns.
- Accompany students to the Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital when hospitalizations are warranted to ensure students feel protected and have their needs met.
- Manage all requests for records and contact providers for clinical summaries when necessary to ensure timely response to requesting parties.
- Alongside Clinical Coordinator, promote an effective interface between the Center’s front desk staff and its clinical team with the goal of enhancing a culture of collaboration and mutual respect.
- Address student care and all assessments in a culturally responsive manner to support students in a framework that acknowledges their unique and intersecting personal and cultural identities.
Provide professional, liaison role between the UCC, other Student Care Network entities, and off campus resources:
- Assist in the establishment of community resources, and facilitate access to appropriate referrals, ensuring students are well connected with Student Care Coordination, the Center for Student Well-Being, and the Student Health Center.
- Order and follow laboratory results, directing those to the appropriate Center medical provider.
- Obtain insurance pre-authorizations for prescribed medications by the Center’s medical providers to facilitate the work of the Center’s medical team and ensure access to prescribed medication.
- Provide relevant clinical information to the Student Health Center upon referrals from the UCC.
- Develop effective working relationships with the Vanderbilt community, including Student Care Network entities, the Student Health Center, academic deans, faculty, residential staff, Dean of Students departments, Vanderbilt University Police Department and other relevant campus partners, to ensure a collaborative support network on campus to respond to student needs and optimize support and safety for Vanderbilt students.
- Participate in development of effective and innovative intervention and skill development programs for students based on knowledge and awareness of emergent campus mental health trends and needs.
- Participate in the development of quality improvement initiatives, policy and procedure development to ensure safe and effective psychiatric care.
- Provide outreach and educational programming to campus community to support campus and individual mental health, wellness, and skill development.
Perform other administrative functions:
- Serve on divisional committees and working groups to enrich the experience and resources available to staff across the division.
- Participate in division-wide events (Move-In Day, Rites of Spring, Diverse ‘Dores Day, MLK Day, etc.), as needed, to support colleagues and ensure these events run smoothly.
- Learn and comply with financial policies and procedures related to travel, procurement, and expense reporting in order to be a good steward of university funds.
- Engage in professional development, including presentations at pertinent conferences and workshops, to expand upon and bring back skills and knowledge to the greater UCC team.
- Perform other duties necessary to enhance the student experience and/or facilitate the success of the University, division, or department.
Supervisory Relationships:
The RN reports administratively and functionally to the UCC Associate Director of Psychiatry.
