Job Description

Position Summary:

The Moving & Event Set-up Technician is part of the Plant operations department within Facilities at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for moving/transporting items across campus and setting up and breaking down special events. Reporting directly to the Move Crew & Pest Control Manager. 

Facilities’ annual budget exceeds $100 million in operating expenses and includes over 400 employees.  Facilities manages major capital project expenditures totaling ~$125 million annually and facility renewal, replacement and large maintenance project expenditures totaling ~$20 million annually.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Move and transport furniture, boxes, hard and soft material, and various types and pieces of equipment in a manner consistent with material handling safety guidelines         
  • Set up and breakdown special event furniture and equipment such as tables, chairs, tents, staging tables, stanchions, and various other items necessary to support the event         
  • Operation and use of various material handling devices and equipment such as forklifts, tractors, pallet jacks, tow motors, furniture dollies, and four wheel dollies as necessary to accomplish the task at hand              
  • Operate and drive vehicles such as box trucks and pick-up trucks in a safe and effective manner and may be required to pull trailers and tow equipment        
  • Follow written and verbal directions and report to the shop supervisor the necessary information to facilitate the completion of the work requested        
  • Use basic hand tools to dismantle and/or assemble simple ordinary furniture and equipment necessary to perform the move or event setup that would be commonly viewed as to be reasonably expected of their skill and experience level          
  • Properly load and unload trucks and trailers and use of tie down straps and other anchoring devices         
  • Assist other trades when the circumstances demand in a manner contiguous with their skill level  
  • Perform regular physical effort: lift in excess of 50 lbs., bending, climbing, stooping, carrying items up/down stairs, lifting overhead, etc.
  • There will be a need to work overtime as required           

Supervisory Relationships:

This position does not have supervisory responsibility; this position reports administratively and functionally to Move Crew & Pest Control Manager.

 

Experience and Education:

  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Valid TN drivers licenses is required.
  • One year of previous experience is preferred.
