Job Description

This position is a member of the Student Services team within the Athletic Department's Ingram Center for Student-Athlete Success and will report directly to the Director of Educational Enhancement. The Educational Enhancement Coordinator/Learning Specialist will assist in the implementation of the Educational Enhancement Program, including learning services and tutoring. In addition, this position will support department programming by identifying student-athletes’ academic skill sets as well as designing and implementing systems to assist student-athletes in obtaining desired academic outcomes.

About the Work Unit

Vanderbilt University’s Athletics Department prepares student-athletes to become leaders and champions in life by placing the highest values on integrity, character, sportsmanship, and victory. Vanderbilt is a charter member of the Southeastern Conference and is the conference's only private school. The university fields 17 varsity teams (6 men's teams and 11 women's teams), 15 of which compete in the Southeastern Conference.

Duties and Responsibilities 
 

  1. Assist in the implementation of the Educational Enhancement unit, serving as a learning specialist for a caseload of student-athletes and supporting the tutoring program
  2. Review background information and current academic performance of referred student-athletes and determine if specialized assistance is needed
  3. Coordinate, conduct, and scale academic assessments to screen for learning challenges of incoming student-athletes 
  4. Design and implement academic success plans for qualifying student-athletes in collaboration with Student Services Coordinators
  5. Determine the need for diagnostic evaluation/testing by reviewing standardized testing records and personal observation of each assigned student-athlete
  6. Work with individuals and groups of student-athletes to teach and develop successful academic skills in the areas of reading, writing, organization, time management, testing, learning strategies, and other general study skills
  7. Communicate appropriately with the University Counseling Center, Center for Student Well-Being, Student Access Services, and other campus departments offering learning support
  8. Collect and report academic data as needed 
  9. Monitor evening study halls as assigned
  10. Serve as a mentor and role model for student-athletes in terms of upholding integrity, cooperation, and self-reflection while stressing the importance and benefits of education
  11. Work in a cooperative, team atmosphere to support student-athletes’ needs
  12. Comply with all NCAA and SEC rules and regulations
    1. Work in conjunction with the department’s compliance office to stay current on all rules and regulations to ensure we are operating with the highest level of integrity
  13. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Educational Enhancement, Assistant Athletic Director for Student Services, or Athletics Senior Management team

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is necessary. 
  • A Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of full-time experience with an academic unit in athletics is preferred
  • Experience developing, evaluating, and implementing a learning support program is preferred
  • Organized, detail oriented and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision is necessary
  • High emotional intelligence and ability to communicate effectively is necessary
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division I and SEC rules and regulations is necessary
